Juicy Tales from Mitropoliei Street (Sibiu)

Known as “platea carnificum” in 1494, as Fleischergasse (Butchers’ Street) from 1751 to 1919, and as 1 Mai Street from 1948 until the ’90s, Sibiu’s Mitropoliei Street, as we know it today, has made its way, together with its buildings and its people, through years, decades and centuries.

And so, in the Year of Our Lord 2021, 527 years after it was first recorded as “platea carnificum,” Latin for Butchers’ Street, fate has brought Lullula here. And since we already talk about Mitropoliei as “our street,” we’re starting a little series: “Juicy Tales from Mitropoliei Street.”

This is where all the street’s interesting and juicy stories will find a home. Oh, and it has plenty to tell! For many centuries, one of its corners was home to the Town Hall of old Sibiu, the Altemberger House, today the History Museum.

So every celebrity and crowned head who ever visited Sibiu passed through here, starting with King Vladislaus II Jagiellon, of the Polish royal house, who was welcomed and feasted here in 1494, and continuing with the great composers of the 19th century: Liszt, Strauss and Brahms, who all gave concerts in old Hermannstadt.

Written in the Lullula workshop in Sibiu.
